Chancellor Martin Takes ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Students, faculty and staff gathered in Holland Bowl to see Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, Thursday, Aug. 28. The challenge was held at the Student Organizational Fair & Showcase, hosted by the Office of Student Activities.

Martin received his challenge from friend and colleague, President Steven Leath of Iowa State University, and hopes his participation will bring more awareness to the fight against ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

Often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Dorian Davis, president of the Student Government Association and the Aggie Mascot, had the privilege of pouring the ice water on the chancellor’s head.

Martin also challenged North Carolina Central University Chancellor Debra Saunders-White, Guilford Technical Community College President Randy Parker, Western Carolina University Chancellor David Belcher and the management staff of Aggie Dining.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which began on July 29, has taken the internet by storm, raising millions of dollars and gaining traction among celebrities and everyday people alike.

Since July, the ALS Association has raised $94.3 million from existing donors and 2.1 million new donors, compared to last year’s donations of $2.7 million (raised during the same time period).

The event will be shared on YouTube and on the university’s social media sites.
